'Battlestar' gets extended fourth season

Battlestar Galactica's fourth season will now comprise 22 episodes instead of 13, after the Sci Fi Channel increased its order.

The season will commence with a special feature length episode that will be screened towards the end of this year, and be released on DVD shortly afterwards.

That sounds like good news, eh?

Yes! Or... possibly. I love BSG, but S2 and S3 have had a tendency to dip between the mid-season climax and the season finale. Perhaps S4 will not suffer the same dip.

Maybe. The other theory being floated around is that the reason for the extended season order is that they plan to wind the show up after that and it's cheaper to make 22 episodes in one go than 13 episodes with a hiatus between them. I guess only time will tell? ;)

Hm, yes, that would make sense. Given that I'm still languishing in the first quarter of season one, I can't really comment on the prospect of a fifth season one way or another.

Incidentally, I saw a thing this week about Boston Legal being renewed for a fourth season in part because of its "upscale" audience. I was going to post a link about that too, but I figured you'd already have heard. It amused me though.

It's funny, because the overall ratings for BL have been pretty good (not to mention the Emmy nomination for Spader), so it's a bit vexing that they seem to need to justify the renewal decision this way. Still, if it gets me another season that can't be a bad thing! :)
