I know I'm pretty much in a minority of one on this, but Ricky Gervais? Peter Kay? Not funny.

I disagree with you about Peter Kay, but I have, and always have had, MAJOR Ricky Gervais hate. He's just cringeworthy.

I guess it works in The Office (I've never seen it), but just a bloke standing on a stage being a slightly offensive idiot does nothing for me.

With Peter Kay, I don't mind his tv show, but it's the same sort of thing for me in that I just don't think his persona carries over well without its context. But it's a personal thing. And I dislike Gervais more than Kay, if that helps ;)

I've only seen bits of The Office, and I always turn it off. I know the point of his character is that he is offensive and makes you cringe, but I don't see how it's funny if it's SO offensive it makes you turn off... I saw him on Jonathan Ross last night and apparently he can't watch his episode of Alias because he can't stand watching himself do serious acting.

The thing is, I've seen that episode and I can't stand to watch it because his acting is so bad, it's the only time he's ever made me laugh. And he was supposed to be an evil terrorist bomber person!

I think with Peter Kay there are a lot of in joke type things, where if you haven't seen all his shows and live acts, it's not funny. Which kind of alienates the majority of the people watching Live 8...

The thing with Gervais is that he doesn't seem like he is acting. And that's normally a good thing, but when it leaves you with the impression that he really *is* a bastard, it's not good at all. I imagine it was meant to be a joke that he was using Live8 to plug his new show, but it sure didn't seem like one to me.

I doubt whether he could act his way out of a paper bad. That's probably the real reason he can't stand to watch his own "serious" acting - because it is so bad.

With Peter Kay, it seemed like he was mostly just trying to bully the audience into singing along to "his" song, which didn't strike me as remotely funny. But like you say, there were probably things in there that just passed me by entirely.

I've yet to see either of them do anything vaguely amusing...

A minority of two, then. It's a start though.

I like Gervais. not in the office, I never liked that, but I have his live dvds and apart from a few bits they're really rather good. Not fabulous (like Billy Connolly or Eddie Izzard. <3 Eddie big time) but it is good enough for a giggle.

I like Ricky at certain times. There are things he does I think are very good. His voice as the character in Valiant is fabulous. Is like the kids version of himself and I think he's at his best there.
And his golden globe acceptance speech was superb.

I didn't dig the Office particularly, although Gervais was v. funny on Jonathan Ross last night... mostly because he's mates with JR and they basically sat there ripping the piss out of each other. He was a bit of a twat on stage earlier "Oh no, don't make me do the dance" while practically limbering up for it.

Peter Kay? Miming was much funnier when it was Milli Vanilli.

That bit annoyed me too. "Did someone say do the dance? Oh no, I couldn't possibly!" So contrived. No one said it but him.

YES! Thank god someone had the balls to point out the Ricky Gervais isn't any good.

And as for Peter Kay - if I hear one more bloody 'Bolton' joke...

See, I first thought that Ricky Gervais was just a character dreamed up for the 11 0'Clock Show. When I found out he was really like that all the time, I was stunned.

I find Peter Kay's stage shows hilarious, but I think the humour stems from northern working class life and doesn't really appeal to anyone outside that. Also, in interviews he has his head shoved so far up his own arse that you can't hear the funny anymore.

I like Ricky Gervais on The Office, but only because he's supposed to be horrifically unpleasant in a pitiable sort of way. Though I wouldn't like it if it weren't for the rest of the cast. Can't stand him in the few interviews I've seen with him - seems too much like David Brent in real life, :P.

Peter Kay's live shows are funny, but I don't like his TV series.

Ricky Gervais, though - I can never tell if he is a complete twat idiot or is pretending, but either way, it's not funny and he should shut up. People can be stupid enough on their own without his influence encouraging them to think it's funny.
