Specific seat - Surrey South West. We were the 3rd Lib Dem target seat, but not only have we stayed Tory, the little Tory they parachuted in after Virginia Bottomley stood down has considerably increased their majority from 861 to almost 6,000. So - fuck :(
Overall, we're not doing too badly, but all these Tory gains and our lack of progress against the Tories are depressing as Hell.
But then he was a former President of NUS who sold students down the river when he voted for top-up fees. So actually I think he got what he deserved. Just a shame he wasn't replaced by a LibDem.
I still hold a great deal of residual fondness for him based on his beating Portillo and there's not much could shift that.
I wish if he had to lose he'd been beaten by a Lib Dem as well, that goes for all the lost Labour seats, because of the sheer arrogance and xenophobia of the Tories.
It's a real shame, because it's clear the Lib Dems have worked hard this campaign. 12% swing from Labour to Lib Dem in my own constituency, cutting a sizeable swathe off the Labour majority.
It's worked on disaffected Labour voters, but I think the Tory scumbags suddenly noticed the tax on earnings over £100,000, thought "well fuck, that means me!", and went back to their Tory roots of taxing those who can't afford it, cutting public services, blaming everything on immigrants, and letting Oliver Letwin hold a position of power over other human beings. Bastards the lot of them.
Other human beings? Since when has Oliver Letwin been a human being? ;)
And yep, there's nothing like threatening Tories with taxes to make them foam at the mouth. I was hoping that showing their selfish, xenophobic tendencies would make people vote Lib Dem instead where appropriate but apparently not. Oh well.
Only in the very broadest sense of the term "human being", naturally. *g*
Apparently selfish and xenophobic appeals to the people of South West Surrey. *sigh* That's what I get for living in the London commuter belt, I suppose. Note to self: move north.
That democracy is a nice theory, but in practice it falls at the alter of human stupidity, selfishness and ignorance, and that therefore I should take over the country and impose a totalitarian dictatorship. Mmm yes.
Meh. Stoopid Tories. Though I was pleased to see my one at home (where I didn't vote) increased her lead from like 0.9% to 12%. So yay Lib Dems there! And lots of the seats around me in Dorset were won by Tories, but with a LD swing. *has been on the BBC website being geeky*
But, wah, I was hoping your one would change! *hugs*
I'm sorry. It all worked out wonderfully here in Cambridge. The Lib Dems got in for the first time in (I think) 90 years. Some ridiculously high figure anyway.
Of course, we're still surrounded by Conservatives on all sides.
You know, you were right yesterday when you said voting would make me feel closer to Cambridge. I do, especially now that the Lib Dems are in.
On the other hand, last election I voted in Guildford and they went Lib Dem, they lost in Guildford this time and are Tory again.
