1984 is total genius. Total Genius.

I love that book. It was on Radio Two?

The first part of eight was on tonight at 9.15, yes. Good stuff. I wrote an essay about 1984, comparing it with Primo Levi's If this is a man, when I was at Uni. Must reread it when I have a chance. The book, I mean, not my own essay.

Okay, that's two of the most depressing books I've ever read it. I love both, though.

I wrote an essay comparing 1984 with Blade Runner.

Come to think of it, I've never read that book in English... should find a copy.

They are depressing, but very worth reading, probably for exactly the same reasons that they're depresing.

Blade Runner. Interesting. I've never read the book, or seen the film. I really ought to, one or the other.

So true. I read 1984 when I was 14 or so (yeah, I used to read "grown stuff", see how I've ended up ;), and all the way I was thinking that Winston and Julia's love would overcome everything and they would defeat Big Brother and all, and then... well not exactly. It opened my mind to the dark possibilities of unhappy endings and TPTB ruling everything. That's a lesson I won't forget in my life.

Blade Runner. Interesting. I've never read the book, or seen the film. I really ought to, one or the other.

I used the film, because the teacher wanted us to compare different genres/media. First I thought I'd have to focus on the aesthetics and all, but ended up finding more common points than I thought. If you can watch the film, it's very good, and it has an excellent soundtrack.

Definitely. Right up to the end, I sort of expected everything to turn out all right, and I went in to reading it knowing it was a dystopian vision of the future. It's so amazing, and there are so many levels it can be read on. Fantastic stuff, truly.

I'll have to see if I can pick up a copy, or catch it next time it's on tv.

Oh yeah. All the different effects the society has, and the historical revisionism. Amazing.

Have you seen the film? I's quite old, but not bad. Some of the imaginery wasn't as I expected, but it's a decent adaptation.

I don't think I have, but I don't know if I would. I have such a clear picture of it in my head, it might spoil it to see someone else's version.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is a fabulously strange book and is absolutely nothing like the film. <3 Philip K Dick

I have a feeling we have a copy downstairs actually. I'll have to borrow it.

It's a very good story. I like both the film and the short story for entirely different reasons.

One reason to love the film - Harrison Ford!

I'm sure your essay was a work of genius well worth re-reading!

It won't let me listen to it on the internet! Rubbish!

I think it was the best essay I wrote at Uni, in terms of marks if nothing else, but that's not exactly a glowing recommendation *g*

Bad internet, no biscuit! Maybe it's repeated on BBC2?

Promise? I think Big Brother is stopping us from listening to this subversise message, you know. That's why there's an "error".

I promise.

Hmmm... you may be right. After all, they are watching us through the screen.

I think your icon has a subversive message trying to make me watch Hollyoaks. Must. Resist.

Nah, if I was trying to subvert you I would've used this icon. Oops, how did that happen.
