Squirrel's epic swim across lake

Tourists on board a pleasure boat in the Lake District could not believe their eyes when they spotted a red squirrel in the middle of Ullswater.

The mammals can swim, but they find it very strenuous, and have been known to drown in water troughs.

But this determined squirrel had swum 300 yards (274m) - or about the length of six swimming pools - from the shore.

Passengers lowered a rope to the mammal and it climbed on board and hitched a lift back to shore.

This is like a live-action Disney film - the little squirrel, boldly training for the Animal Olympics, mocked by his squirrel peers, and other animals, but he keeps going and makes it to .. wherever the Animal Olympics are held. Probably all for the love of a beautiful girl squirrel, voiced by Angelina Jolie, and with a wily rat as his trainer, a bumbling hedgehog as his supportive but slow best friend, and a flock of middle-aged-women pigeons who watch him run and make initially disparaging comments but are eventually won over by his pluck and courage, and can be seen, towards the end, cheering him on (along with the rest of his animal friends) via a TV screen in a shop window. Why the Animal Olympics would be on TV, I don't know, but I'm sure Disney can come up with some reason.

In fact I think I should draft a script. Disney would eat me up with a spoon ;)

I imagine this as something along the lines of Ice Age or Madagascar. I would totally go see it! I think you should pitch it quick before someone else thinks of it. :D

Ice Age is exactly what I was thinking (haven't seen the other one). If I knew how to pitch it, I totally would.

And based on a true story, too! I think you're on to a winner.

Totally. It'd be great publicity - we could have pictures showing the real squirrel next to the animation cells. Awesome! :)

Pitch now while you can. Don't forget, proper American writers are currently in no position to be pitching ideas...

Can I have a signed copy of the DVD when it comes out?!

Lol! I think I'd probably get blacklisted for crossing the picket lines or something.

Definitely on the DVD count though :)

I think you're OK as long as you aren't signed up to the WGA. You'd have to make sure to negotiate a decent contract though.

Heh. Well I'd have to write the story first. One thing at a time :)
