So, yeah. I caved. It was entirely
nausica2's fault. What can you do. *shrug*
But before that, So in that final scene, Sheppard goes up to the control room, after he and Rodney have had their domestic and Rodney's apologised. He goes into the control room, spots Radek hobbling about on crutches, talks to him for a bit wherein Radek reveals his daring plan for them to override the safeties and fly to a planet - only a 50% chance of death!
During this scene, Rodney is there, sitting in front of them - John has his back to him, as he's addressing Radek. However, even though Rodney is not initially part of the conversation at all, and John is only talking to Radek, he turns around to look at Rodney three times. There's absolutely no reason for him to do this, but it's like he can't help himself.
I love that. And I wanted to share :)
And so, the accidentally released onto iTunes episode. Look away if you're being strong and not reading spoilers. I commend you. Okay, firstly I like that they spelled it right. I know, it's lame, and most people do get it right, but some people don't and it drives me nuts. So yeah, that pleased me.
I really wasn't going to watch this one until the Friday night when it airs, as I'm away that weekend and wouldn't otherwise see it, but
nausica2 was there like an unholy fandom crack dealer, telling me how goooood it was, and I couldn't resist her wily charms. I attempted to run it through MediaPlayer and WinDVD, neither of which worked, but for some reason this weird program I happen to have called Nero Showtime ran it perfectly. Go figure! I assume it's something to do with it being an iTunes file converted to avi, but whatever. That's really incidental.
So, yeah, overall I loved it! After the first five minutes or so, I really wasn't sure what all the fuss was about. But once it started to fall into place, it all made sense. I'm going to break it down again, as it's easier to think about it this way.
Minor character beats: I loved seeing Lorne again, especially seeing Lorne!feet!! That was just too cute for words! And Kate Heightmeyer, even though she looked constipated for most of her scenes. I really liked her "friendship" *cough cough* with Teyla, and how comfortable Teyla was with talking to her. After her intial scepticism about all that earth psychobabble, Teyla probably had weeky sessions with Kate to deal with all the shit she's been through in her life. And yeah, some week's they'd just end up sitting on the couch together drinking froofy herbal tea and talking about boys, but it's really good that Teyla's being allowed to have some female friends (beyond Lieutentant Plotdevice from Sunday, who doesn't count). It's just a shame she keeps losing them. I loved Kate's nightmare - that she'd be unable to cope with it all, and that mean old not!John would stop her girl-BFF Teyla from saving her. I was very sad that she was killed though :( I'm not signing up as President of the Heightmeyer fanclub or anything - heck, I can't even spell her name - but she was one of the old crew, you know? It's sad that she's gone. And v sad for poor Teyla. Speaking of which:
Teyla + John = BFF 4 eva: I wasn't sure I was going to like that scene, when she turned up at his door, especially given Ronon in Teyla's dream talking about the John/Teyla luv we're apparently supposed to see. But more on the dreams later. The hugging scene, however, was too cute for words. It wasn't "omg teh luv", although for the shippers I'm sure they could read it that way if they choose. And that's totally cool. But for me it was about friendship, and Teyla being close enough to John that she can just turn up at his door and hug him without having to say a word about why, and he knows and hugs her right back, even with all his touch issues. And yeah, he still totally has touch issues, especially "intimate" touch (no, not *that* kind of intimate, you pervs), but he manned up and hugged her when she needed it because they're BFFs and he loves her, in whatever way you choose to interpret it. It was totally cute.
Ronon: Seriously, Ronon being clueless when Sam, John and Teyla were working out how to save Rodney was my favourite Ronon scene ever. He's just so funny when he's being clueless. I have to admit to being rather sceptical as to whether John would ever get a shot in to Ronon that did enough damage that he needed *stitches*. I suspect, rather than "sparring" or whatever excuse they gave, they were doing something totally stupid like having a wheely chair race down the corridors or skateboarding down staircases or something, and Ronon fell and cracked his head. No way John inflicted that wound. That's cool though. Ronon's dream was really cool too - having to leave Atlantis, running again and being trapped, a slow suffocating death, being his nightmare. Awesome.
Teyla's dream: Mmm, more background info on Teyla's life = awesome. Her dream was the most disjointed, I presume because it was up first and it couldn't be obvious to the audience what was going on. I wonder if John, Ronon and Rodney being there was part of her "normal" dream, and not!John was just the Wraith!John (and how awesome was it to see him back in the Wraith makeup? Pretty damned awesome!) and the other one - so real!John (uh .. real!dream!John?) was just the one sitting at the table scoffing food, a la Rodney. Hmm.
All the blatant lesbianism: There so was! First all the Teyla/Kate Heightmeyer stuff. I don't really see any other interpretation of that. I thought it was Teyla dreaming again when she was being held back from saving Kate from jumping, but for Kate to dream that Teyla couldn't save her.. Well, it's pretty lesbian, I think. At the very least I'd say Kate was nursing a major girl!crush on Teyla. So that was cute. Although obviously sad, because now she's dead and Teyla's all miserable. There was also a bit of Keller/Sam, I think, after Sam's big "uh.. so, Heightmeyer's dead. She meant so much to us all .. well, except me. I only met her the once. And, well, we might all die from this. But .. try not to worry, okay?" speech. Why was Keller even there? Sam just has a thing about female doctors, it seems. Bad luck Rodney.
All the blatant gayism, aka. John and Rodney: Yeah :) They so are. It's all been said already I'm sure, by far more eloquant people than me, but .. John's nightmare is Rodney's death? Okay, so, spin it that it's any of his team dying because of his actions, or any of his people, but it's not, is it. It's all about Rodney. Because they're totally in luuuurve ;D Shut up, it makes me happy :)
rivier made a very interesting post about the echoes of Hide and Seek, which I would never have spotted in a million years, because I'm not that clever. But yeah. I can't really even put it into words right now. It just made me very happy :) As the crappy fbers say: More, please!
Sam: I'm sorry, I know this is really against popular opinion, but I like Sam. I really do. I don't like that she's getting unneccessary screen time, and I don't like her overriding Rodney on stuff and being all superior and whatnot, but generally I like her and I think she may well turn out to be an interesting addition to the show. Maybe I'll be proved wrong over the next few weeks and months, but I'm willing to give it a chance so far.
Keller: Yeah, her Aliens story was pretty lame, and her and Sam pushing in on Team Time isn't great - where does she get off anyway, she barely knows them! Carson was there for three years and he never horned in on Team Time! - but for the most part, she's okay.
Team: I mentioned the John and Teyla stuff above, but I also loved the Ronon and Rodney stuff - there was teasing again, but without the cruel undertone that creeps in sometimes. I liked it :) And them all turning up at the table together (sans Keller and Sam, please!) was really sweet, especially Rodney's tray piled high with food (which John, and no one else, seems to be allowed to steal). Cute :)
Oh also: Rodney and Radek having a bet about the planet, and Rodney forcing Radek to go and face the dangers glowy crystals. Lol! :)
There were also one or two things that I wasn't so sure about:
The blatant use of CGI during the Sheppard vs Sheppard fight: Come on, guys. I know it's sometimes necessary to fudge these things, because (sadly) there aren't really two Joe Flanigans in the world, but CGI? No. If you can't actually do it with actors / stunt guys, dont' write it in there!
Fear of whales: So ... where was this mortal fear of whales during Echoes, hm? We had a whole episode about Rodney and bloody whales and it never came up? No, I think not. They could've used something else, to fit in with backstory, but they didn't. Perhaps I'm missing something, but that just smacks of lazy writing to me.
I think that's all though, and I can totally overlook all that stuff because the feelgood factor was sky high :) I'm so v happy right now. Woo! And indeed, yay! :D
Keep it coming, guys!
