When in doubt, post a meme *g* Last seen on [livejournal.com profile] epeeblade's LJ, this looks rather fun. Although sadly these days I don't write in any fandoms. But maybe this will inspire me. Don't feel obliged to stick to "pirates with fairy wings set in the 14th century but with space technology" type AUs. You know me, my favourite AUs are the "what if X happened/never happened?" type

The Hypothetical AU Meme: Take any one of the fandoms you know I write in, and give me a type of AU (space opera AU, pirate AU,superhero AU, Ancient Rome, etc). I will then explain what story from your chosen fandom I would write for your chosen type of AU.

I had a good old think about this, as pirate!AU is not something I've ever even considered before. As I'm horrendously lazy when it comes to research, if I ever did write pirate!AU, it'd have to be space-pirate!AU, and as such it would probably have to involve the canon space pirates, Larrin and friends. In terms of the story, it would perhaps start with the destruction and evacuation (not necessarily in that order) of Atlantis. There would then, I feel, be a period of general confusion and wandering around not knowing what to do. For some reason which I am not clear on at this point, they (pretty much everyone has survived. At this point) are unable to get back to Earth. Possibly because the Daedalus only has sublight engines or .. oh, who knows. But they're stuck in Pegasus and, despite having talked from time to time about succeeding from Earth and setting up their own colony, no one's actually very happy about it.

After a little while of .. hm, hanging out with some previously friendly but technologically backward allies - not sure who yet - they'd get bored and probably start running missions. The military structures would be breaking down by this point, with control over the marines and such becoming both tighter and more personally based, and with control of the scientists and other civvie staff becoming looser and much less likely to succeed. There'd probably be a bit of work-related-but-not-personal conflict between Sam and John, as Sam would be tearing her hair out over everyone screwing around while John would think she was failing to adapt.

So, yes, there'd be break away groups wanting to do different things. What's left of the traditional military structure would start running missions again, while the scientists pitched in when they felt like it, which they would more often than not (see above, re: boredom and non-technically-advanced allies). Through one of these missions (we're getting to the pirates bit now!), someone (Lorne?) would bump into Larrin and pals.

Eventually, after some comic hilarity involving John getting tied to things (always funny), and John sort of half-heartedly pursuing Larrin, who's really not that interested either, what's left of the Atlantis crew set off to join Larrin's pirate crew (a few folks choose to stay with aforementioned allies - incidentally, the few remaining Athosians (man those guys have had a crappy time of it) have stayed with the allies. That's why we went there - these allies are like Athosians, only less fun). Teyla will umm and ahh (arr?) over what's the right course of action, should she go or should she stay, etc., but eventually she (and Junior - not Teal'c Junior) pack up and join the Atlantis team, because that's where she belongs now etc etc. Aawwww.

And then they fly off and have some pirate adventures, which involve doing piratey things like ... uh ... stealing stuff? Probably fighting some Wraith - the Wraith are pretty much kicking ass now, so the pirate folk are very much the underdogs, but it's up to team Atlantis (can't you just picture the cheerleaders?) to convince them that attacking the Wraith is worth the risk to their civilisation.

It'd probably end on them re-establishing contact with Earth, which they'd thought was destroyed by .. uh .. the Ori?

Then I'd promise a sequel, but I'd never get around to writing it, and the one person who made it to the end would be a bit cross for a while, but would soon get over it.

So that's my pirate story. A little non-traditional, I fear. If it would help, they could wear bandanas and say "arr" a few times. That'd probably fit in quite nicely. And there'd be lots of pirate jokes about parley and things of that nature.
