Date: 2005-04-06 08:14 am (UTC)The best we can hope for, imo, is that Labour will lose seats but retain a majority, the Tories will likely make a few gains, but hopefully not too many, and the Lib Dems (who were the only party against the Iraq War) will make lots of gains. It's more likely that Labour will make some losses, the Tories will make some gains, and the Lib Dems will make a few gains, but not enough to make me really happy *g* As long as Labour's majority is reduced, their power will be reduced too, and Tony B will lose his ability to dictate to Parliament quite as much as he currently does.
The Labour Party are meant to be the socialist party, the centre-left. Tony B, however, is .. well, a little more right-wing than many of those who remember when Labour was a left-wing party are happy with. Still, he got Labour into power, broke the dominance of the Tory party in government, and there have been a lot of socialistic policies to redistribute wealth and increase spending to public service. They just keep quiet about that stuff for the most part. The major issue is that Tony took us to war in Iraq with dodgy evidence, and as such has personally lost the trust of the British people. He was voted in on a very personal basis because he was young, dynamic and trust-worthy. Iraq lost him that trust.

Date: 2005-04-06 08:25 am (UTC)We were quite infatuated by Tony when he won. Spain was ruled by the right (grrrrrrrr) and the socialists were very lost and looking for their own Tony.
As the Iraq war was pushed by the right and the socialists were against it, we could change government, and all is not as well as it should, but better. Still I don't know about your country, but in mine I wasn't sure Iraq would have been enough to make Aznar (MayHimRotInHellNextToMargaretTatcher) loose if it weren't by Madrid bombings and all the blatant lies.
I don't think left wing parties of the socialist kind (Labour, the French, our Socialists, SPD, the Uolivo italians) aren't very left these days. Especially in economic policies, but they're better than conservatives, because at least they push progressive social policies.
It's a bit of a shame, because influenced as I am by contemporary history, when you say "labour" I think about 19th century miners going against evil patrons and all.
And Tony Blair doesn't fit the image ;))))
