Sorry for being somewhat spamtastic today, but the BBC are just being that interesting. Japanese develop 'female' android.

Scientist inventor dude: "An android could get away with [passing as human] for a short time, 5-10 seconds. However, if we carefully select the situation, we could extend that, to perhaps 10 minutes."

What possible application is there for this technology other than prosti-droids? Anyone?

Cheap TV presenter labour? Or realitt TV show contestants? Sales assistants who as helful than call centres? Decoys/stand-ins for President Bush (that would be the carefully selected situation...)

None of the touch-sensitivity would really be necessary, though, so I guess prosti-droid's the main aim.

Depends who's pushing the android's buttons. If it's Dick Cheney.. well, I doubt there'd be much difference from now, except that an android is less likely to choke on a pretzel.

I don't understand why androids are built to look human. I mean, apart from the whole challenge of it, and of course the prosti-droid future. But otherwise, it's a bit like building a bicycle to look exactly like a horse, isn't it?
