Post-election come down

I'm so tired. I just want to go home and go to bed.

I'm getting over the bitter disappointment of our seat remaining Tory. Well .. no, not really. But I'm thinking about it less. Not only did we lose, the Tories increased their majority from 861 to around 6,000. If I were Simon Cordon, I think I'd be inclined to give up :( We also lost Guildford to the Tory scum, so I am now absolutely surrounded by Tory seats on all sides. Hideous.

On the positive side, the Lib Dems have picked up more seats than they were predicted - 62 so far - which can only be a good thing, and Blair's majority has been severely cut in to. Unfortunately that does mean that the Tories have won some seats, and Letwin *spit*mayheburninhell*spit* and Davis and all those delightful fuckers remain in place.

Still, you can't have everything, and at least we still have a Labour government. I'm quite divided on the George Galloway issue. I think I need to do more research about him and his party before I make any judgements. I feel bad for Oona King though. She seemed pretty decent, as MPs go.

We went out for a post-election plus birthday for two staff members lunch today, which was nice. There has also been much mourning for the loss of The Twigg, who we were all rather fond of.

Still. Life goes on.

George Galloway just seems to be out for himself and his acceptance speech was vitriol itself. He seems to have exploited racial feeling for his own gain. Oona King was apparently an extremely good local MP. I don't know the man just scares me!

Indeed. Someone suggested today - I forget who - that Galloway may have been using Muslim disquiet with a mixed-raced woman MP to boost his own position, which is awful if it's true. I don't know. Something about someone who stands on such an obvious platform of personal revenge over hurt feelings doesn't sit right.

Last night I think Tony Banks suggested that
He was so furious at George Galloway and totally disgusted.

Oona King has struggled against a tide of prejudice due to being a woman. But she really worked hard for her constituents. I think they're worse off now they have Galloway as their MP.

Personal revenge is no basis for being a good and legitimate MP.

He actually said in the campaign that due to her support of Blair and the war she was responsible for the death of people with 'blacker faces then her own.'

From what little I've seen of Galloway so far, he seems like a fairly self-involved, self-important sort of chap who's not above using absolutely any advantage he can scrape together to win whatever point he thinks he needs to win. Let's just hope he doesn't cause too much hassle at Westminster, and when the next election comes round, he gets summarily kicked out.

From what I've seen of George's campaign he seemed to be politicising young muslims in Bethnal Green and Bow - which is a good thing because there has never been a section of the vote who have felt so disenfranchised since the miner's strike.

I've heard talk of him exploiting racist and sexist issues re. Oona King but I've never heard any evidence of such things. The thing he probably hated most about Oona was that she was an arch-Blairite - one of the original 'Blair's Babes'.

He's controversial, old George, but by God he's intelligent. The way members of the Labour party talk about him you'd think all that stuff the Telegraph wrote about him and Saddam's regime was true - when in fact it was a huge pack of lies and George was vindicated in a court of law. Puzzling bloke. I can't help wondering why they hate him so much.
