Divided-at-birth twins 'married'

A pair of twins who were separated at birth got married without knowing they were brother and sister, a crossbench peer has told the House of Lords.

A court annulled the UK couple's union after they discovered their true relationship, Lord Alton said.

The peer - who was told of the case by a High Court judge involved - said the twins felt an "inevitable attraction".

He said that they were adopted by separate families, and neither was told that they had a twin sibling.

Details of their identities have been kept secret, but Lord Alton said the pair did not realise they were related until after their marriage.

Hardcore.

I just read that on BBC news.

That must have been horrible for them.

Totally. It must be just about the worst thing ever for a couple to go through.

Oh my god. I read a Deirdre Purcell book with a similar story once. I thought how silly the concept of that "inevitable attraction" was. Ha, that will teach me.

I wonder how they found out? I wonder how they feel about it? So many questions. I am such a nosey voyeur type but it really is fascinating. Who'd've thought it could happen outside Deirdre Purcell type novels?

Yeah, they're doing a similar storyline in Hollyoaks at the moment, although that's a half-brother and sister. I think it actually happens relatively often, when separated parents/children and siblings come back together, even when they do know they're related. I saw a documentary on it once, a few years ago. Very interesting stuff.

Yeah, I know it's apparently quite common for adult reunited relatives who know they're related to sleep together. At least in those cases you're talking about people making informed decisions. Bit of a shock if you did it by accident, though!

It brings me back to that great storyline in Brookside. Good old soaps. :D

Ah Brookie - Nat and Georgia. I remember that one. So groundbreaking, for it's time.

Rhys and Beth in Hollyoaks didn't realise until afterwards, and then, after struggling with it, hating each other for a bit, etc., they went back for more (on Xmas Day - I love TV land). But now she's left, to go to Thailand with his best friend.

Soap operas - is there anything better?? ;)

No, nothing better! I really should watch Hollyoaks. I think my flatmates would beat me to death with the remote, though. Or else I could suck them into it too. After all, the other day we all sat around watching SGA commenting on how John and Rodney were definitely boyfriends. Maybe I'm good at converting people...

Hollyoaks is a bit like crack. I've managed to get my flatmate watching it, fortunately, so there's no remote-related violence. It's not particularly good at the moment, to be honest, so I wouldn't try hooking anyone in just now. But I think they're starting to build up towards a few things that'll be good (e.g. JP's forthcoming relationship with a Catholic priest).

A ha! omg, I have to watch that one. Keep me posted when it looks like that's heating up!

Also, icon love in context, eh? ;D

(So we manage to turn a discussion of two unfortunate people dealing with personal tragedy into a chat about gay priest kink. Go us!)

I'll keep you posted *g* At the moment John Paul's sister is after the priest (Kieron), while JP stands around rolling his eyes at her, but I've heard fairly from fairly reliable sources that there will be some JP/Kieron action at some point fairly soon. Hah :)

I may just have chosen that icon specifically ;) Although it is also made of awesome.

In the end, it all comes back to fandom. *g*
